Covid19 and my journey from Developer to DevOps
In the year of 2019,in the month of November, I had joined my organization as a Java developer. I got rolled-on to an airlines project where I was enhancing an internal testing tool developed in Java. The first 3-4 months was pretty good as I was enhancing my knowledge in the project field. Along with that I was sent to Chennai for a couple of weeks with few new friend-cum-colleagues.
During mid-March, a sudden blow that shook the entire world - Covid19. Like many industries - Airlines industry got impacted. Due to budget constraints from client end, there was a mass roll-off from the project and after a week I got rolled-on to a Resource industry based project. During the interview round I was asked to choose a role among the three teams - UI-Development Team, DevOps Team and Analytics Team. I was always eager to work in Cloud Technologies and I was not biased to any field of work, so I promptly opted for DevOps role.
It worked as a magic and I was introduced to both AWS and Azure environments first time. I got so much thrilled that within a couple of month I got strong hold of almost every corner of the environment. I got acquainted with AWS resources like EC2, S3, Elasticbeanstalk, Lambda, ECR, ECS, CloudFormation, EMR and Azure resources like VMs, App Services, NSGs and more. There were scopes of using containerised application and their deployments and maintenance with orchestration tool - Kuberenetes.
Within a tenure of 2-3 months post joining this project, I completed my Azure Fundamentals - AZ-900 certification with a high score. I felt that I was so blessed to work in this wonderful team with so kind and considerate colleagues who are so knowledgeable.
But Covid19 continued to show its wrath worldwide, that impacted our project as well. I got rolled-off with many associates.
I got rolled-on to another project which develops a platform for various industries. I got exposure to extensive use of Docker, Kuberenetes and Helm and also got introduced to Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) of AWS as well as Google Kubernetes Engine(GKE) of GCP. I am learning regularly with the great supporting team members.
When I look back from the day when I joined till now, I feel lucky that I have shifted from Developer to DevOps as I am able to learn a loads of new things daily. There are challenges that I had to face daily but I face them with positive vibes and excitements. :)
Best of luck Brother!
